Ray Nagin, the former Democratic mayor of New Orleans, was indicted Friday on 21 federal corruption charges, including fraud, money laundering, bribery and filing false tax returns, the Associated Press reported.
According to the AP, Nagin allegedly accepted "payoffs, free trips and gratuities from contractors while the city was struggling to recover from the devastation of Hurricane Katrina."
The 25-page federal indictment said that Nagin defrauded New Orleans through "a bribery and kickback scheme" where he reportedly accepted cash, checks, personal services, wire transfers and free travel from businessmen seeking preferential treatment from the city.
