The starting salary of a teacher in our school district is $68,000.00 a year. That comes with two weeks paid vacation, and five days paid sick leave. Included are a pension and the fully paid medical coverage. Let’s not forget about the 12 week summer vacation teachers enjoy. Finally, teachers enjoy the benefit of having their student loans fully discharged. What’s about that generous pay package doesn’t relay a generous helping of ‘appreciation’ to our teachers?

What’s so special about a teacher anyway? In reality, their job isn’t any more difficult than that of a soldier in Afghanistan, or of that of an emergency room intern, or of a housekeeper at the local motel. Still, every year I receive a note from the school reminding me that Teacher Appreciation Week is fast approaching and I am reminded to send the kids to school with a cash donation to help the school pay for a Starbucks for the teachers. Also, the money goes to have the teacher’s car washed.

And, don’t forget to give the teacher a card, the note reminds us. Have your kid print neatly on the inside, “To Ms. Pilcher, you are the greatest, most beneficent teacher in the world! Thank you for all you do and sacrifice for us!” The note from the school goes on to say, “Please have your child drop the card off on Friday, with a small gift and your cash donation.”

So, I pay over $7000.00 a year in property taxes. I am asked to buy $40.00 worth of school supplies, per child, per year, to give to the school. My kids sell all sorts of crap out of catalogues to help fund the school, along with walkathons, spelling bee-a-thons, school carnivals, candy sales (Does Michelle know of this?) and raffles. I’m 'nickeled and dimed' by the school so that I must spend two hours a night working with my kids to undo the crap the school has filled in their heads, so that I can honor some union hack who society insists we should place on a pedestal along with truly deserving people like Mother Teresa, or Victoria Soto, who sacrificed herself to save her first grade students by throwing her body in front of gunman Adam Lanza. Some people are deserving of being held up and honored, to be sure.

I’ve grown weary of placing our public school teachers on a pedestal. I realize there are great teachers out there. But, not all teachers are great, and we certainly don’t need to be taking time out of educating our students so that they can take part in a ceremony which glorifies the teacher, who probably doesn't deserve the attention and recognition anyway.
